Guillermo del Toro has given us some amazing horror flicks, be it in live-action or stop motion. The Oscar-winning director has given us flicks like Nightmare Alley, The Shape of Water, Crimson Peak, Pinocchio, and is soon bringing his own take on Mary Shelly’s classic, Frankenstein, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and more. But there are still unmade projects on his bucket list, one of which might never see the greenlight. Del Toro has been eyeing HP Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness for a long time, but he recently revealed that the movie is dead and not moving forward.
When asked in a new interview about resurrecting his passion project after Frankenstein, the fan favorite director said, “I don’t think so, I would hope so.” At the Mountain of Madness is full of Lovecraftian creatures and a civilization lost in time. Bringing it to life in R-rated format is no easy feat, Del Toro further revealed, “It depends, it’s a big movie. It’s a complicated movie to shoot. It is R-rated. So I don’t think people are lining up to do it.”
To give fans a taste of his imagination, Del Toro previously shared a decade-old CGI test clip that was loved by fans. Written in 1931, At the Mountain of Madness follows a doomed exploration to Antarctica, told from the perspective of protagonist Dr. William Dyer. It acts as a warning for others who may be interested in having their own adventure to the previously unseen continent. Throughout the story, we learn about larger-than-life monsters and a long-lost civilization that used to inhabit the snow-clad lands. All of them have vanished but for a collection of their sculptures and murals.
